Abstract
Sarcopenia refers to the gradual loss of skeletalmuscle mass and function along with aging and is a socialburden due to growing healthcare cost associated with asuper-aging society. Therefore, researchers have establishedguidelines and tests to diagnose sarcopenia. Several studieshave been conducted actively to reveal the cause of sarcopeniaand fi nd an economic therapy to improve the quality oflife in elderly individuals. Sarcopenia is caused by multiplefactors such as reduced regenerative capacity, imbalance inprotein turnover, alteration of fat and fi brotic compositionin muscle, increased reactive oxygen species, dysfunction ofmitochondria and increased infl ammation. Based on thesemechanisms, nonpharmacological and pharmacologicalstrategies have been developed to prevent and treat sarcopenia.
Although several studies are currently in progress, notreatment is available yet. This review presents the defi nitionof sarcopenia and summarizes recent understanding on thedetailed mechanisms, diagnostic criteria, and strategies forprevention and treatment.
